The Congress Republican Party seems to be out of touch with the nerve centre of the American idea of immigration – the party is currently after President Obama’s government to shut down the Department of Homeland Security – a move that will affect 0.25 million employees of the Department, forcing many out of employment and triggering “furloughs” for thousands of workers. This seems to show how out of step the Republican party is with the issue of illegal immigration. As it is, sources say, the Secret Service, Coast Guard, Customs and Border Protection forces are highly demoralized, due to the high rates of illegal crossing over of immigrants taking place on the borders and seas.
Surveys reveal that 60 per cent of Americans are opposing the way GOP is jeopardizing Homeland Security – they think this is a measure to subvert the Obama government. According to a television poll a big majority feels that the entire issue of department funding should be kept separate from immigration policy. But what is frustrating, sources say, is that the GOP is not at a consensus even on immigration policy. Some of the Republicans refused to take up a bill passed by the Senate in the year 2013 – this could have paved the way for around 11 million illegal immigrants. Any alternative legislation to address the question of handling undocumented immigrants was also not addressed.
