Many undocumented youngsters find a place in Maryland schools. The children pose a tremendous challenge to their educators and as an individual themselves. Even though Maryland schools are well equipped with immigrants, still thousands of unaccompanied minors streaming across the borders from Central America bring in new set of issues as most of them are teenagers who cannot speak English, added to it the education or academic level in schools are poor.
Many of the minors are illiterate high school going and girls are sexually assaulted during their journey across the border and other suffers from depression and psychological or emotional trauma.
Maryland has tried to accommodate as many as 2,804 unaccompanied immigrant children and more are expected to flow in as per the US Department of Health and Human Services. The schools are hiring more teachers who specialize in working with teaching foreign students, trying to find nonprofit partners to assist students when the school runs out of resource and to provide health clinics and group counseling sessions.
According to the US Supreme Court decision in 1982, public school systems are required to provide children with education regardless of their immigration status but the enrollment figures show less than half of the total enrollment.
While administration is doing a great deal when it comes to immigration but still it seems less is done, may be there should be a right kind of approach and right immigration reform should be put in place.
