The US Border Patrol has purchased body cameras and will begin testing them this year at its training academy. The Customs and Border Protection Commissioner did not say how many cameras were bought or discussed when or whether they would be introduced to any of the agents, whose number roughly 21000 on the field. This measure is the first step toward satisfying activists who have long demanded cameras as a way to keep a check on potential abuses. It is likely to meet opposition from the National Border Patrol Council, which has said that cameras would be expensive and may cause agents to hesitate whenever their lives are threatened. Activists were told that it was decided to change the way how authorities investigated possible criminal misconduct by Customs and Border Protection employees.
