The Obama government recently announced a range of what it calls “improvements” to make living better for around 1,000 families that included women and children who were currently being held in 3 detention centers – some of them for almost a year – these people have moved illegally, mostly from the Central Americas to the United States of America.
ICE, or the Immigration and Customs Enforcement authorities stated that it would step up accountability by setting up a “Community Advisory Committee”, appointing an official who would be responsible for the centers, and looking out for ways in which living conditions could be improved and striving to speed up the adjudication of detainees’ cases. Most of the immigrants stated that they were migrating away from violence that was rampant in countries of Central America and the United Nations had urged that they be given access to asylum procedures.
ICE Director recently stated that the office understood the “unique and sensitive nature of detaining families” and they were committed to maintaining the optimum level of care needed in order to tackle the difficult area of illegal immigration. Director Saldana stated in a news release that more understanding and commitment would be employed in order to enable all individuals who were detained or in custody were held and treated in a humane manner.
