• DOES THE “IMMIGRANT PARADOX” APPLY TO EDUCATION TOO?
  • 18_1April A recent study came out with some interesting facts: immigrant students who come from second – generation families do better in studies than those from first – generation and even third – generation immigrant students.

It was also seen that second generation immigrant students did better than first generation students in standardized tests. Moreover, better grades were earned by them than their third-generation peers.

This could be what researches declare as the “immigrant paradox”. Researchers refer to the term in order to show what happens when immigrant children start displaying dangerous behavior that includes drug abuse, alcohol intake and violence only after a few generations have come and gone.

What is not clear is whether the “immigrant paradox” also pertained to education.

On the basis of research culled from over five decades researchers found that due to the general, positive attitudes of their immigrant parents and coupled with the fact that they had access to more resources than their first-generation parents, the second generation of immigrants did better in academics than those of the first generation.
