  • BEFORE THE VISA INTERVIEW: THE IMMIGRATION MEDICAL EXAMINATION
  • 20_1April Green card applicants! Remember to take the immigration medical exam before your visa interview!

It is important to note that applicants who are in the process of applying for their green card must first plan to complete the immigration medical examination, conducted by USCIS-approved Civil Surgeons before attending the visa interview. If the immigration medical examination is not done before the visa interview processing of the applicant’s visa case will be delayed or held up until the immigration medical examination’s results are received by the U S Consulate or Embassy.

It is therefore, strongly advised to green card applicants that they first go in for their immigration medical examination and then appear for the visa interview.

USCIS – APPROVED CIVIL SURGEON: SCHEDULING THE IMMIGRATION MEDICAL EXAM

USCIS-approved Civil Surgeons are specially appointed by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, the officiating body for processing all visas pertaining to immigration in the United States.

The medical examination involves a complete assessment of the green card applicant’s medical history, a physical examination, chest X-ray, vaccinations and blood tests. The physical examination includes the examination of the eyes, ears, nose and throat, extremities, skin, external organs, heart, lungs, stomach and lymph nodes.

The USCIS-approved Civil Surgeon will conduct the examination and then hand over the report to the applicant in a sealed cover, which will then have to be handed over to the authorities for further processing.

  • APPEAL BY OBAMA GOVERNMENT TO LIFT STAY ON EXECUTIVE ACTION
  • 20April A federal appeals court seemed as if it was divided over President Obama’s government’s appeal to lift a lower court order that was blocking the administration from executing the President’s executive actions in order to protect unlawful immigrants from getting deported and trying to grant them work permits.

An oral discussion lasted for almost 2 and half hours – exceeding the decided 2 hour session. During this session a 3 panel involving 3 judges from the U S Court of Appeals discusses with lawyers from the Justice Department and the state of Texas over whether President Obama acted within his rights when he singularly put into place the new border-control policies last a fall.

A representative of Justice argued that a judge from a federal court from Texas had committed an error in February when he put an end to Obama’s deferred action program as there are deliberations going over a lawsuit that was filed by the state of Texas and 25 other states. President Obama’s administration has made an appeal against the Judge’s injunction, and is asking the court to bring a stay to the order, with the hope that agencies can start enrolling immigrants in a deferred action program.

It was stated by the representative as to how the decision of the district court was incorrect when it came to the matter of law.

  • DOES THE “IMMIGRANT PARADOX” APPLY TO EDUCATION TOO?
  • 18_1April A recent study came out with some interesting facts: immigrant students who come from second – generation families do better in studies than those from first – generation and even third – generation immigrant students.

It was also seen that second generation immigrant students did better than first generation students in standardized tests. Moreover, better grades were earned by them than their third-generation peers.

This could be what researches declare as the “immigrant paradox”. Researchers refer to the term in order to show what happens when immigrant children start displaying dangerous behavior that includes drug abuse, alcohol intake and violence only after a few generations have come and gone.

What is not clear is whether the “immigrant paradox” also pertained to education.

On the basis of research culled from over five decades researchers found that due to the general, positive attitudes of their immigrant parents and coupled with the fact that they had access to more resources than their first-generation parents, the second generation of immigrants did better in academics than those of the first generation.
