With more than 20 million immigrant women and girls in the United States this important section of the workforce has built up to a formidable presence in the US society and US economy. Immigrant women come from every corner of the globe and even outnumber the immigrant men population. It has been observed that women are more likely than men to come to the United States following the family-based immigration system, and nearly half of them turn out to be naturalized US citizens. Foreign-born women account for 15 per cent of all employed women over the age of 16 in the United States. From these women more than a quarter of immigrant women have a bachelor’s degree or more, with Indian women being the most highly educated, followed by those from the Philippines and China. Despite their high educational qualifications and hard work they still earn a lot lesser than foreign –born men, and even lesser than native-born men and women.
Given the huge numbers, challenges and diversity encountered by these women the scale of their economic contributions cannot be denied.

Report from racial justice think-tank says, often thousands of American children are seen living in foster care across the nation, especially after the upswing of immigrants in 2011. Some of these children never get a chance to reunite with their families again.
In the first half of 2011 alone, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement deported about 46,000 immigrants who have American children – some just a few months old – leaving about 5,000 kids to pine away in foster care while parents try in vain to get them back.
When parents are arrested, often for minor offenses and as children cannot be removed from their homes, child welfare agencies despise to release kids to other family members who are also illegal immigrants. As a result, children are forced into foster care, when they could be placed with their own families.According to the study found American kids in 22 states whose parents had been deported or detained and as child welfare agencies don’t have effective communication channels with ICE, social workers have a hard time finding the parents. Often the parents’ names disappear from jail rosters with no notice to social workers, who then have no contact information for the parents. Then the parents are left with a choice – accept deportation and face years of fighting for custody from outside the U.S., or stay in detention to fight deportation, which can also take years.
In addition to destroying families, separating parents and children which costs like anything, when parents are detained and kids sent to foster care, the NGO’s are spending money that could be used to enrich families instead.

Various immigrant groups are exerting intense pressure on President Obama to stop deporting so many undocumented people in the United States. Moreover his decision to put off a sweeping executive action is being reacted to very angrily.
Why is Obama not pushing forward the executive action now? His ploy is visibly transparent – with control of the Senate due for elections by November it is obvious that he does not want to create an embarrassing situation that would rebound against endangered Democrats in conservative states.
But what President Obama should recognize that the issue does not just fall within the purview of election-year politics. If he just waits until after the Elections and goes ahead with the executive order he might, in the process transform an important social initiative into a benign political gimmick, which would not be very fortunate in the long run.
A comprehensive immigration law is desperately needed by the nation – one that would combine a path to legal status for undocumented workers with increased enforcements and reforms to the legal immigration system.

: It is something unusual to see children attending school inside the jail. Classrooms monitored by security cameras, artificial turf soccer field in the courtyard, this is the school for immigrants who have fled to the US along with their mothers-mostly from Central America.
Classes are eight hours a day at Karnes County Residential Center. The curriculum for pre-kindergarten to 12th grade is the same as bilingual schools across the state. Days begin with the reciting of pledges of allegiance in English to the Texas and American flags.
Amid a surge of families and unaccompanied minors pouring across the U.S.-Mexico border, authorities converted what had been the all-male Karnes facility about 50 miles southeast of San Antonio to one with capacity for 532 women and children.
The Karnes center allows detainees to move freely around the grounds, enjoying free Internet access, flat-screen TVs, and a hair salon. Instead of guards, lockup personnel are “resident advisers.”
The Karnes officials are helping the children to socialize and acclimate in order to bring back from the trauma of what they had undergone before making to US.
Facilities in Leesport, Pennsylvania, and Artesia, New Mexico also house immigrant parents and children. The Leesport center offers schooling, while Artesia plans to begin classes in a few weeks.
Families in detention at Karnes are from Brazil and a few are from Mexico, but all others are from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, where immigrants are fleeing street gangs and drug smugglers or extreme poverty. Many have sought U.S. asylum.
Thousands of other children detained without their parents — comprising the bulk of the immigration influx — are processed differently. Many of those unaccompanied minors have already been released to live with relatives in the U.S. and have matriculated into ordinary public schools as their cases progress.
