  • Presidents of Central America’s Northern Triangle join efforts to eradicate immigration crisis
  • Could a joint effort plan from Presidents of Central America’s Northern Triangle nations to mitigate immigration crisis work?

US is seeing the citizens of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, especially children from Latin America crossing the border. A lot of stories can be heard from these immigrants who have escaped from their deadly countries due to unemployment, poverty, gang violence and other forces. Families have been shattered, and members have been forced to take the drastic decision of shifting themselves to a safer country like the USA. But at the back of their minds they are always wanting to go back to their own country, worried what will happen to their homeland,  where they want to live, work and raise their children.

Decades ago these countries were free from the current forms of violence, murder etc., but today,  with the help of US aid programs that help rebuild the institutions, eradicate drug production and expand their social protection, Colombia and other Central America countries have undergone some serious turnaround. Though violence and crime have dropped down, investments are pouring in, boosting their economy and the young migrants no longer wish to migrate anymore.

Presidents of Central America’s Northern Triangle nations are calling for a comparably ambitious joint effort that would combine foreign aid and local resources to attack the root causes of the immigration crisis. Illegal immigration can be mitigated by this joint effort, legal immigrants can be entertained; they are the need of the hour in the US.

This plan could work and it would be beneficial if Central America looks at priorities of providing jobs, better education and health care and stringent laws to end the violence.

  • Pregnant women detained in six immigration detention centers across the US
  • Nearly 559 pregnant women detained in six immigration detention centers- report by the Fusion’s review obtained under Freedom of Information Act.

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reported in 2010 an agency policy that ICE wouldn’t be detaining any pregnant women, unless and until only in the case of unexpected circumstance, and mandatory detention would be done. In the normal case, a woman is released; provided there is no kind of threats to the country, she has no criminal record and gang ties etc.

Fusion’s reviewers of documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) have reported that nearly 559 pregnant women have been detained in six immigration detention centers. The average time spent by these pregnant women in the detention facility is almost a month.

Reports imply that women are underfed and deprived of medical treatment. They are neglected by the ICE officials during pregnancy and childbirth. As per Human Rights Watch report, women also go through severe unsanitary conditions, forcing them to re-use the sanitary pads for their menstrual periods and receive inadequate pregnancy care.

Immigration lawyers commented that these kinds of tactics are used in order to impose pressure on immigrants so that they are forced to voluntarily accept the deportation rather than wait for their turn for a court hearing.

  • Possible ways to enhance Child Refugees arriving in US
  • 5-Aug

It is now a well-known fact that staying in cities like Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala has become increasingly violent especially for children. Honduras has become a murder capital of the world, with crime figures higher than Iraq in 2007. This is the reason we see high number of children fleeing from this county.

US has seen more than 57K children arriving to the country this year. It is trying to tackle by implementing steps to curb border crossing along with safe guarding children. A supplemental funding bill of $2.7 billion has been requested by the administration to take care of the border crossing issue. But, administration still has its short comings. Efficient measures can be taken by the government to revise some of the processes like:

    – Reduce process time so that children do not have to wait for an immigration judge to hear their claims. The current waiting period is almost 587 days as per the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse.

-Contagious countries (Mexico & Canada) can undergo immediate screening by the Border Patrol, but U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has found, the border patrol has proper training in screening these children. In fact most of the screening is done in matter of minutes.

    – Within 72 hours children from all over should be turned over to the office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) in the department of Health and Human service by the border patrol and deportation proceedings.

President Obama can take initiative to speed the process for children who are

fleeing from violence, without sacrificing fairness in due process and without changing existing law.
