  • HUMINATARIAN CRISIS AFFECTING CHILDREN AND FAMILIES FLEEING TO THE USA
  • It is unfortunate that the provisions in 2 recent bills introduced in the Congress show minimal understanding of the great difficulties that are affecting children and families who are trying to seek asylum in the United States. The “Asylum Reform and Border Protection Act” that has been introduced will do away with whatever protections exist under the current laws – that offer fair protection to unaccompanied children at least a fair chance, as the situations are under review. As it is, the country’s strict asylum process would be gutted out, to the point that those validly seeking protection from harassment and persecution would not be able to do so, now.

Many professionals have come out against the provisions with singular vehemence. They feel that the Representatives have brought about a bill that show very little understanding about how difficult it would be, for children, or anyone, to seek refuge in the United States.

Another bill, the “Helping Unaccompanied Minors and Alleviating National Emergency (HUMANE) Act would also tear away many of the protections being currently offered by the country to unaccompanied minors and children. What it would do is to strip away any protection being currently afforded to children who could potentially be the victims of trafficking or modes of violence. Lawmakers feel that both provisions could display a very wrong impression to the world, about the country’s values, moral standards and ethics.

Both provisions to the law could prove to the world that the USA is hostile and heartless towards children – in fact, lawmakers claim that most Americans are positively concerned about children’s issues, enacting these provisions could have a very damaging effect to the country’s image in the world.

  • More Central American immigrants seen than Latinos
  • The latest immigration crisis has brought a break from the prototype of the past; more faces from Central America especially from Honduras and El Salvador are being seen in the US than the Latinos. These children are basically escaping from their countries due to violence from their home countries rather than seeking jobs in the US. This has left the foreign-born population more open to debate, as its number continues to grow in the US rapidly.

The face of immigrants is changing faster than immigration debate

  • New tool from US Customs and Border Protection: tracking the Entry/Exit across the Canada-US border
  • 14-july Snowbirds (people coming into the USA from Canada or vice versa) need to be more cautious while entering and leaving their respective countries now as the US Customs and Border Protection has come up with a new tool that tracks the number of days a person is staying in and out of the country.

Earlier both US and Canada were able to track only the entry of the person in to the country but things have changed with the new tool; it gives a complete report of person’s whereabouts. This emphasizes the need for snowbirds to keep their own detailed report of the number of days being spent across the borders of the US and Canada.

The tool has eased the tracking system considerably; both countries can now share the information with each other. Individuals too can now request for the report and compare the tracking with the border’s record to rule out any errors, before potentially being denied entry back into the US for having surpassed the allotted number of days, by giving details of their passport number, full name, and birth date.

A person surpassing his stay by more than six months in the US will be needing a viable immigration visa to continue to stay in the US.
