• Possible Path to US Citizenship – RPI Provision
  • With an estimated 16 million undocumented immigrants, the Senate has proposed an immigration bill that gives the applicant a clear roadway to citizenship.

    The US proposes to grant a 13-year path to citizenship through border security, economic opportunity and Immigration modernization act that would gives registration to these undocumented Immigrants living in USA.  The bill has made additional provision of $40 billion to the border security, which also includes thousand of visas that has been allocated for the highly skilled and low-skilled immigrants. The bringing out of E-verification has also helped employers to check the work authorization of their employees.

    As per the bill, when an applicant applies for the citizenship, there are first given the status of Registered Provisional Immigrant (RPI), which gives undocumented immigrants the legal status to live in US for a period of six years with an option of renewal for another six years. On completion of ten years successfully, the applicant will be eligible for applying for the Adjust Status of Permanent residence and after that, they can go for Naturalization. Totally its takes 10 years to get permanent residency green card status and 13 years long to get US Citizenship.

    When an applicant application is in the process of the RPI status, they will not be deported out of the country. In case the person is expected to be removed and knows that he or she is eligible for RPI status they will be granted opportunity to apply for RPI.

    The RPI-granted person needs to pay a sum of $500 for registration. Once it is accepted in the first year of the bill’s enactment, the person can apply for the RPI status for his spouse and children. Both will be granted the visa and can stay in the US. The people are eligible for RPI only if they meet the requirement as below:

    Registered Provisional Immigrant On completion of six years lawfully, the applicant can renew their RBI status by paying $500. In case the person is not able to pay full amount they can go for installment. After completing 10 years, the person with RPI status are eligible to apply for permanent residency, provided all the documents submitted by them are processed and they get their Immigration Medical Exam from designated USCIS Civil Surgeon successfully.

    RPI Naturalization:

    As per the provision listed, the RPI immigrants after completing three years lawfully in US can go for naturalization process just like others who take up the test given by the USCIS

    • Citizenship test
    • Interview – should be able to answer at least 6 question right out of 10
    • Take Oath of loyalty to the US.

    The provision will surely help most of the undocumented immigrants if it comes to force.
