It is now a well-known fact that staying in cities like Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala has become increasingly violent especially for children. Honduras has become a murder capital of the world, with crime figures higher than Iraq in 2007. This is the reason we see high number of children fleeing from this county.
US has seen more than 57K children arriving to the country this year. It is trying to tackle by implementing steps to curb border crossing along with safe guarding children. A supplemental funding bill of $2.7 billion has been requested by the administration to take care of the border crossing issue. But, administration still has its short comings. Efficient measures can be taken by the government to revise some of the processes like:
– Reduce process time so that children do not have to wait for an immigration judge to hear their claims. The current waiting period is almost 587 days as per the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse.
-Contagious countries (Mexico & Canada) can undergo immediate screening by the Border Patrol, but U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has found, the border patrol has proper training in screening these children. In fact most of the screening is done in matter of minutes.
– Within 72 hours children from all over should be turned over to the office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) in the department of Health and Human service by the border patrol and deportation proceedings.
President Obama can take initiative to speed the process for children who are
fleeing from violence, without sacrificing fairness in due process and without changing existing law.
